E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy students celebrate Fibonacci Day

Students at Royton and Crompton Academy celebrated Fibonacci Day on the 23rd of November.

November 23 is celebrated as Fibonacci day because when the date is written in the mm/dd format (11/23), the digits in the date form a Fibonacci sequence: 1,1,2,3.  A Fibonacci sequence is a series of numbers where a number is the sum of the two numbers before it.

In maths lessons, students explored the link between the famous sequence and the golden ratio, this was studied in further depth using measurements of each other’s faces to see how this links to the golden ratio.

Leonardo Fibonacci was a mathematician from Pisa in Italy who was considered to be one of the most talented Western mathematicians of the Middle Ages.

Andrea Atkinson, Headteacher at E-ACT Royton and Crompton Academy said:

“It was great to mark Fibonacci Day by bringing maths to life with some fun, practical learning in our lessons.  I know the students enjoyed learning about his theories.”
