We believe in  a holistic education, experience and curriculum, which ensures that our students  leave our care ‘as rounded individuals with an awareness and understanding of the wider world’.

We recognise that British Values and SMSC play a significant part not only in our students ability to learn and achieve, but in their ability to relate fully to and have the ability to access the world they live in.

Through focussing of key British Values by developing an understanding of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and SMSC (Spritiual, Moral, Social and Cultural issues)  we provide an education that provides students with opportunities to explore and develop their own values, whilst recognising that those of others may differ.

SMSC and British Values are  focussed on during assemblies throughout the academic year. The weekly focus of assemblies are then followed up and reinforced via form discussions and activities of which some are deeply philosphical, some are whimsical and some contain important news items of the time.

Numerous opportunities exist for SMSC and British Values development thought the school.  A variety of educational visits within school and extra-curricular activities and clubs are open to all students. Some of these clubs are focused on curriculum areas (e.g. music vocal group), however, many offer a generalised opportunity for students to develop their teamwork, cooperation skills and social development. External groups from the local community also provide regular support with lunch clubs and assemblies.

Success over the last 12 months is evident in the development of the Cadet Force, emerging links with industry, E-Safety day and  work of the Humanities Faculty which  leads the whole school Remembrance Day and Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations which make a huge contribution to the school and indicate the high value placed on matters SMSC. Furthermore, visits from artists, authors and business companies ensure that our students experience and benefit from working with those outside their usual friendship groups whilst boosting their own academic achievements. We are very proud of our Rewards assemblies for each year group at the end of each half term to raise aspirations and celebrate success of all students of all abilities. These are embedded within our school and are an integral aspect of our approach to learning and sharing the core principles of British Values. Celebration evenings allow the school community to join to together in recognising contributions made by our staff and students in a variety of ways. Students value this recognition and thrive on the celebration of their role in the school.

We believe it is imperative that all adults model and promote socially responsible behaviour, treating all people as valuable individuals and showing respect for pupils and their families and stakeholders. Students should learn to differentiate between right and wrong in as far as their actions affect other people.  They will be encouraged to value themselves and others and should understand their rights and accept their responsibilities and the need to respect the rights of others.
