E-ACT’s best-ever progress scores at key stage 4

6 February 2020

The government has today published its multi-academy trust league tables for 2019 which reveal that E-ACT has achieved its best-ever progress scores at key stage 4.

Progress 8 is a measure of the progress children make between the end of primary school and the end of secondary school. Unfortunately many of our pupils join our secondary academies with low starting points given our location in some of the most challenging parts of the country. However, we believe that all children, no matter their background, should have access to the best possible educational opportunities.

Whilst we are aware that there is more work to be done, it is testament to the efforts of our staff and pupils that our progress score has improved to average from below average in the space of a single academic year. Everyone at E-ACT can be proud of this achievement, and we fully expect this upward trend to continue across our trust.

Heartlands Academy confirmed as one of the top six secondary schools in the country

The latest DfE figures also reveal that Heartlands Academy in Nechells, Birmingham, has been ranked the number one sponsored secondary academy in the country and the sixth best secondary school in the country for progress. With around 3,500 secondary schools in the country, this places Heartlands Academy in the top 0.1% of secondary schools for progress.

The academy’s achievements are all the more impressive given its location in Nechells, the 16th most deprived ward in the entire country and where unfortunately more than two thirds of children grow up in poverty.

Heartlands Academy has a Progress 8 score of 1.47 at key stage 4, meaning that students at the academy have achieved on average one and a half grades higher in every qualification than other similar students nationally.

In 2018, the academy achieved a Progress 8 score of 0.61, which was already significantly above the national average, and led to the academy receiving a national award for outstanding progress at the Schools, Students and Teachers (SSAT) Network Educational Outcomes Awards.

Key stage 4 success across the trust

Heartlands Academy’s success is in line with achievement across the trust. In direct comparison to 2018, the number of E-ACT students across the trust achieving a standard pass (9-4) in both mathematics and English (either literature or language) has leapt up by six percentage points to 55%, the trust’s best-ever key stage 4 results.

We take this opportunity to thank and congratulate all of our talented academy and regional staff, students and parents. These results are a reflection of their hard work, and we can all be proud of the fact that more E-ACT students than ever before are leaving our academies fully prepared for the rigours of post 16 education and life beyond.
